I am a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Plymouth, UK and have been visiting Kenya since 2011 working with Kenya Orthopaedic Project, now renamed Trauma Team.
I have worked side by side with Kenyan surgical teams with other UK volunteers learning from each other whilst treating patients who otherwise would not be able to afford surgery. Trauma Team volunteers from the UK include medical students, anaesthetic registrars and orthopaedic registrars.
Many of the skills learnt in Kenya have helped with my daily practice as a surgeon in the UK. Trauma Team is looking to develop its partnership with the Kenya Orthopaedic Association in the future. Side by side working is a fantastic way to develop professional partnerships in surgery around the world. For more information visit the Future Health Africa website.
