“University served as a platform for me to explore different sectors of the maritime industry and to articulate my interest, which I built upon throughout my studies, through my final year dissertation.”

Tell us about your career path since graduation.

After my last examination paper, I took a short holiday to Switzerland. During my time there, I had the opportunity to do an internship in Astra Oil Trading over at Zug. After I had completed my internship, I went home to Singapore to start a job at Thome Offshore Management which I secured in April, before my last examinations.

Did you decide to change your career path during your studies, and if so, why?

In fact, I did. The maritime industry, or in other cases ‘shipping,’ is very much part of our everyday lives. During my studies in Singapore and Plymouth, I have always had an interest in the energy sector, particularly oil and gas – which was an area that was only briefly touched on at school. This was why I decided to apply for a job in the offshore industry.

What, if anything, would you have done differently at university?

My time at university was short. It would have been great if I had been able to stay there longer in order to meet and make more friends of different nationalities.

What advice would you give to anyone wanting to get in to the same line of work?

It is an industry which is always growing, so there are a vast amount of opportunities. Don’t hesitate to make a move and do your best in your studies.

How did studying at Plymouth help you?

University served as a platform for me to explore different sectors of the maritime industry and to articulate my interest, which I built upon throughout my studies, through my final year dissertation.

What is your favourite memory of studying at Plymouth?

Working hard together with my friends, the cold weather (we don’t get that here in Singapore), and, of course, learning to live alone and be independent.
