Women Talking (15)
Director: Sarah Polley, US, 2022, 104 mins
Cast. Claire Foy, Jessie Buckley, Rooney Mara, Frances McDormand
Do nothing. Stay and fight. Leave.
Sarah Polley directs a stellar ensemble cast in this deeply compelling adaptation of Miriam Toews’s acclaimed novel about a group of young women in a remote religious colony dealing with the aftermath of sexual assault perpetrated by the colony’s men.
While the men are temporarily away, the women gather to decide their future – whether to do nothing, stay and fight or leave. Through intense discussions, they grapple with themes of faith, justice, and the desire to create a safer life.
A ferocious critique of patriarchal oppression, Women Talking ushers us through a journey of rage, grief, wisdom, and hope.
“ * * * * ‘Women Talking’ is a rare curio that wrestles hope out of these cruel, intergenerational acts of patriarchal violence. At times it will leave you reeling, as all important films should.”
– Beth Webb, Empire
