The Arts & Culture programme
Celebrating 20 years of creativity
September 2024 marks our 20th anniversary as one of the Southwest’s major providers of arts and culture. We look forward to expanding our programme into ever-more impactful spaces, producing and hosting over 100 events each year for everyone’s learning and enjoyment. We’re dedicated to showcasing our academics and their research to the wider world, while also hosting major thinkers and makers from outside the University. We have a terrific line-up for 2024-2025, and look forward to welcoming you to campus to experience and take part in our ongoing arts and cultural conversation.

Autumn 2024: Heritage and the Contemporary
Our autumn season (September – December) focuses on ‘Heritage and the Contemporary’, exploring where we’ve come from and where we’re heading, welcoming arts and heritage organisations from the region to a symposium in collaboration with The Box. Exhibitions
The Levinsky Gallery opens with New Contemporaries hosting this national touring exhibition for its 75th anniversary alongside KARST and MIRROR in the city.
Music
Musica Viva showcases the ‘music of home’, spanning the 80th anniversary of Bartok through to contemporary folk from Seth Lakeman.
Film
Our Film series returns with Celluloid Psychology, as well as hosting screenings and talks by some of UK’s most acclaimed film-makers.
Talks
The Talks series includes Cultural Talks, Research Seminars, and our new ‘Creative Talks’ series, featuring artists who work in a variety of disciplines, sharing their work, processes, influences, and their own experiences of professional practice.
Performance
Amongst other shows, our Performance programme, taking place in our bespoke House stage, includes the family-friendly, The Whale’s Tale, continuing our programme’s interest in bridging the sciences and the arts.

The Archives: 2004-2024
We’ve produced and hosted over 2000 public-facing events over the past 20 years. Looking back at our most recent spring-summer 2024 season, saw a celebration of creativity designed to inspire, challenge and entertain. Highlights included University of Plymouth academics work and creative collaborations in Resonating Bodies, Green Makers | Materials | Objects and SOAK Live Art. We hosted the major UK touring exhibition, Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize in The Levinsky Gallery and in The House, Rendez-Vous Dance’s The Monocle and Richard Chappell Dance’s Hot House. The acclaimed Musica Viva concert series marked the 100th anniversary of Rhapsody in Blue with the formation of The London Gershwin.
