Women Talking (15)
Director: Sarah Polley, US, 2022, 104 mins
Cast. Claire Foy, Jessie Buckley, Rooney Mara, Frances McDormand
Do nothing. Stay and fight. Leave.
Sarah Polley directs a stellar ensemble cast in this deeply compelling adaptation of Miriam Toews’s acclaimed novel about a group of young women in a remote religious colony dealing with the aftermath of sexual assault perpetrated by the colony’s men.
While the men are temporarily away, the women gather to decide their future – whether to do nothing, stay and fight or leave. Through intense discussions, they grapple with themes of faith, justice, and the desire to create a safer life.
A ferocious critique of patriarchal oppression, Women Talking ushers us through a journey of rage, grief, wisdom, and hope.
* * * *Women Talking’ is a rare curio that wrestles hope out of these cruel, intergenerational acts of patriarchal violence. At times it will leave you reeling, as all important films should.”

– Beth Webb, Empire
As part of our Celluloid Psychology series series, devised by Dr Alastair Smith as an antidote to the usual depictions of psychology in cinema, the screening will be introduced by Dr Sophie Homer , an Associate Professor in the School of Psychology with interests in clinical psychology, mental health, and critical psychology. Sophie is particularly interested in how power structures affect individual experience and wellbeing, and she will explore these themes, alongside feminist perspectives, in relation to the film.
Part of ‘Screen Queens: Women changing the narrative’, programmed by the University of Plymouth Women's Network in collaboration with the arts and culture programme and open to everyone. In this series of female led and directed films where women have ‘changed the narrative’, we are seeking to engage with audiences by amplifying women’s voices and visibility and sharing their stories.
