Introduced by a member of staff from the School of Psychology, University of Plymouth.
A highlight of 20th century European cinema, the Oscar and BAFTA award-winning Cinema Paradiso captures the spirit and communal power of film. Giuseppe Tornatore's loving homage to cinema tells the story of Salvatore, a successful film director, returning home for the funeral of Alfredo, his old friend who was the projectionist at the local cinema throughout his childhood. Soon memories of his first love affair with the beautiful Elena and all the highs and lows that shaped his life come flooding back, as Salvatore reconnects with the community he left 30 years earlier.
Dir. Guiseppe Tornatore, Italy, 1988, 123 mins, in Italian with English subtitles.
Cast. Philippe Noiret, Salvatore Cascio, Jacques Perrin, Salvatore Di Vita, Agnese Mendola.
Celluloid Psychology was devised by Dr Alastair Smith , School of Psychology as an antidote to the usual depictions of psychology on our screens.
The screening will be introduced by BabyLab scientist Alvise Rogers , a Teaching and Research Associate studying the psycholinguistic development of bilingual children. He will discuss the importance of young children’s imagination and the influence of adult role models in shaping their futures.
