Welcome from your Dean

Across the faculty we are committed to delivering research and education that will make a real difference, providing sustainable solutions for people and the planet. From delivering innovative solutions to climate change and driving the net zero transition, to safeguarding our oceans and ensuring food security; and from developing safe and trusted autonomous systems in an increasingly digitised world, to designing the solutions that will help society adapt to a rapidly changing climate, the faculty is creating the innovative solutions required to ensure a more sustainable and resilient future for us all. Based here in Plymouth, Britain’s Ocean City in the heart of the South West, we are uniquely placed to address some of the biggest challenges society faces today.
Across the faculty our ethos focuses on delivering ‘hands on’ research-led experiential research and education enabled by our remarkable facilities. Each of our three interdisciplinary schools offers remarkable opportunities for field- and laboratory-based research and learning. Whether it be out on the water on one of our research vessels or diving in Plymouth Sound Marine Park, or on the beautiful coast and moors that surround the city, to working in our environmental, chemical and engineering laboratories including our state of the art wave, wind and sediment ‘COAST’ facility or in the newly refurbished Babbage Building, where engineering meets design, we are uniquely placed to deliver experiential research-informed education for all.

All of this is made possible by the faculty’s greatest asset, a diverse team of passionate, supportive and friendly staff who are leaders in their chosen fields. They are supported by an equally dedicated and welcoming team of technical and professional staff, who ensure you are supported throughout each step of your journey with us. Whether a prospective undergraduate or postgraduate student, or a prospective industrial or commercial partner, if you too are passionate about making a real difference to global challenges and creating a more sustainable and resilient future for communities, people and for the planet, please do join us.
As incoming Executive Dean for the Faculty of Science and Engineering it is a pleasure to welcome you all, and I hope the information here provides you with the insights you need for your journey. If you have any questions or seek more information do not hesitate to reach out.

Innovators for a sustainable ocean: World Ocean Week 2020

As the United Nations put the global spotlight on ‘innovation for a sustainable ocean’, the University’s Marine Institute reflected on the innovative approaches our researchers take towards sustainable marine resource management.
From offshore renewable energy to coastal resilience, the National Marine Park to plastics, we reflected on our role in securing a healthier, protected future for our oceans.
During the week, a number of our marine conservation researchers led events that brought together global experts to inform future policy recommendations.

Marine Institute

Representing 3000 staff, researchers and students, the University of Plymouth's Marine Institute is the first and largest such institute in the UK.

We provide the external portal to our extensive pool of world-leading experts and state-of-the-art facilities, enabling us to understand the relationship between the way we live, the seas that surround us and the development of sustainable policy solutions.
