In this Bitesize talk, Dr Russell Evans will explore visual poetry, visual haikus, poetry comics and other text/image pieces, focusing on his interests in depicting community trauma and how it is comprehended by those subjected to it. Evans’ recent work in visual poetry explores systemic poverty and collective abuse, and the shared silences of such experiences in working class communities.
Dr Russell Evans is a poet, artist and associate lecturer in creative writing at University of Plymouth. His forthcoming collection of visual poetry Cut Off Your Credit, is due to be published in April 2025 in the US. His work has appeared in journals in the US and UK, and his art has been exhibited most recently in Italy and New York. He is a member of ArtSpeak writer’s group, New York. Evans’ research interests include mental health applications of creative writing in Plymouth and he is currently working on a research project exploring how social prescription can be enhanced in Plymouth. He co-organised the international University of Plymouth conference Poetry and Care in September 2023 and was organiser of the conference and networking event Arts and Social Prescription in November 2023.
