Key features

This 20 credit module can be taken at degree or masters level and will increase your knowledge and skills in the recognition, assessment and immediate management of illness and/or injury in children and young people requiring urgent or emergency care in a range of settings.
At degree level, it will also enable you to apply current research/evidence to practice, incorporating relevant professional, legal and ethical dimensions, and deliver holistic care to sick children and their families.
At masters level, you will also enhance your existing knowledge and skills in the holistic care of children and young people by applying deeper knowledge and understanding to the assessment and management of illness and/or injury and will develop your ability to manage care environments to meet the health needs of children/young people and their families.
Please note that at masters level this module is called ‘APP738 – Management of children and young people requiring urgent or emergency care’.

On successful completion of this module you will be able to:
  • recognise the sick and/or injured child or young person and respond appropriately to their immediate healthcare needs
  • support and empower children, young people and their families by working collaboratively with appropriate members of the multi-disciplinary team, applying their professional knowledge and skills whilst recognising their own limitations and the need for referral
  • contribute to practice developments and the creation of environments conducive to the health of children, young people and their families with urgent or emergency care needs
  • critically analyse and evaluate clinical practice to ensure the provision of safe, effective and holistic evidence-based care, incorporating relevant professional, legal and ethical issues.
Assessment
The assessment for this module is in two parts:
1. a 2,500 word written essay on the management of a child or young person requiring urgent or emergency care
2. a portfolio of practice experiences.

APP738 course details (masters level)

On successful completion of this module you will be able to:
  • demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of a range of minor health problems/injuries in children
  • act with initiative in recognising the sick and/or injured child/young person and managing their immediate care needs
  • demonstrate critical self-awareness and work effectively with members of the multi-disciplinary/multi-agency team
  • act as an advocate to promote environments conducive to the health care of the child and family
  • critically analyse and evaluate relevant professional, ethical and legal dimensions of child care.
Assessment

1. a written essay
2. a portfolio of practice experiences.

Entry requirements

Students wishing to undertake these modules as part of a professional development pathway must be:
  • on a professional register (i.e. NMC, HCPC), and
  • practicing within urgent or emergency care to have the practice experience required to achieve the learning outcomes
  • in possession of previous study at level 5 (Diploma of Higher Education) or a foundation degree to study the module at degree level
  • in possession of previous study at degree level to study the module at masters level.
