Welcome to The Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust. We are the only acute hospital Trust in Cornwall and have three hospital sites. The Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust 5000 staff. We are the main provider of hospital, diagnostic and outpatient services for people in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. The vision for the Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust is to work together to achieve outstanding care and better healthcare outcomes. We will achieve this through:

Learning opportunities
Pre-registration students will have an opportunity to work across any or all three of our hospital sites. This includes Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske, Truro) St Michael’s Hospital (Hayle) and West Cornwall Hospital (Penzance). You will be supported in practice by a mentor and a clinical practice educator. The Clinical Practice Educators also facilitate a weekly teaching programme for students who are allocated a placement at Treliske, Truro hospital site. We are looking to develop new ways of learning in practice by developing our “hub and spoke” model of learning. The aim of a “hub and spoke” is to promote a quality learning environment in all practice placements by broadening the student experience. The “hub” is the students’ primary/main placement and the “spoke” is the secondary placement which is related to the hub placement. For example a pre-registration student allocated an acute ward for six weeks may also spend two weeks working alongside a specialist nurse team or allied health professional.
The Clinical Practice Educators also offer a weekly “drop in” session for all pre-registration students whilst on placement.
The Learning and Development department facilitate weekly “Bitesize” learning sessions. These sessions are held at Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) are for staff as well as students. In addition students may participate in the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust Simulation training programme has been running across different clinical specialities for many years. Simulation training allows people to practice real life scenarios within the safety of a simulated environment, with a strong influence of multi-disciplinary training and self-evaluation. Simulation not only enables people to develop clinical skills but also non-technical skills and teach the importance of communication in the healthcare profession.
