Funded by the Seale Hayne Trust, this was the first study of its kind to examine the impact of dementia on the farming community. Research by Dr Claire Kelly and Professor Richard Yarwood, with support by Ian Sheriff and Joanne Jones, identified four areas of concern identified by the study were: the farm environment; a reluctance to ask for help; lack of support services, and the changing nature of rural communities. The areas of concern emerged after listening to farmers and their families about their experiences of dementia and how it impacts on their business and home lives. The work featured on BBC Breakfast and Countryfile; contributed to the Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Friendly Guide for Rural Communities and informed the Prime Minister’s Rural Dementia Group.
