There’s no doubt there has been a post-Covid change in attitude towards caregiving dads, but there’s still a long way to go to fully accept and support fathers in caregiving roles. Both in the workplace and society as a whole, dads face judgement and deep-seated gender stereotyping. It makes it harder for them to take an active role in looking after their children.

Flexible working, and a more family-friendly culture, is important for everyone. Workplaces need to recognise this if they’re to retain and attract the best talent. We need to level the playing field between mothers and fathers, and enabling more flexible working for fathers and mothers is crucial.
When I started to drop my kids off at school I saw one other dad really at the school gate, and not much else, there are definitely more dads around the playground … since Covid or post-covid definitely.
Nine times out of ten, mum will be called first when there is an issue with the kids. There is still an expectation that mothers are the primary caregiver.
It would be considered more normal for a woman to be laden with the children all day and night, the father comes in after work puts, feet his up and chills out, and that's almost like more socially acceptable than a father that actually steps up.
One of the things that sort of in my head stops me leaving is ..the flexibility and the childcare situation and the autonomy that I have to sort of manage family life.
