Sustainability in the maritime sector, better known as ‘Clean Maritime’, has been gaining traction in recent years.
The government’s Clean Maritime Plan, published in 2019, sets out how the UK can take a proactive role in driving the transition to zero emission shipping in its waters, and the UK is globally recognised as a leader in this field. Plymouth is among the UK’s leading institutions in clean maritime research, with a significant track record already. We would like to grow and diversify our portfolio in clean maritime, and to do that, we need you.
Last year, the Marine Institute held an internal scoping workshop on the topic of Clean Maritime to identify potential interdisciplinary collaboration opportunities for research projects and any existing ideas. To build on this, we are holding another event that looks to move past the "interesting conversations" phase and into developing specific, fundable research projects, from which the University can generate papers, income and impact.
Dr Stavros Karamperidis
, as our appointed lead for Clean Maritime research, would like to invite you to this 2-hour workshop to map out existing research expertise and to exchange ideas, experiences and knowledge.
Clean Maritime is not merely a matter of fuel and resulting shipping emissions but offers the potential for innovative input from a wide range of research areas, including propulsion technologies and associated built infrastructure (e.g., electric, hydrogen), ORE, ship design, navigation and routing, maritime cyber, decommissioning, autonomy (unmanned vessels), materials and maintenance (e.g., antifouling paint, life cycle assessment), etc.
Whether you attended the previous workshop or not, if you see touch points between your research and areas of relevance to clean maritime, we would strongly encourage you to attend to explore possible opportunities and collaborations.
