This 20 credit module can be taken at degree and masters level and will enable you to critically examine the care delivered to people with dementia and gain confidence in your own expertise in dementia care.

You will develop underpinning knowledge and strategies to provide an effective evidence-based approach to the care of the person with dementia and their carer, and you will learn to link evidence-based theory to current clinical practice and formulate strategies that improve service delivery and give effective high-quality care. 

This module will enhance your employability in a variety of healthcare settings.

HEAD347 course details (degree level)

On successful completion of the module you will be able to:

  • demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the brain and integrate this into informed practice
  • critically evaluate the care of a person with dementia including the assessment, planning and implementation of multi-disciplinary interventions
  • demonstrate an awareness of ethical/moral/cultural/legal/professional issues relating to the care and treatment of the person with dementia and their families/carers
  • critically evaluate current evidence-based research in order to implement changes in practice which will enhance the care of the person with dementia and their carer.

Assessment

The assessment for this module is in two parts:

1. a written assignment

2. a presentation

APP732 course details (masters level)

On successful completion of the module you will be able to:

  • demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the brain and integrate this into informed practice

  • demonstrate a deep and systematic understanding of ethical/moral/cultural/legal/professional issues relating to the care and treatment of the person with dementia and their families/carers
  • critically evaluate current evidence-based research demonstrating the ability to analyse and synthesise complex, incomplete or contradictory evidence in order to implement changes in practice which will enhance the care of the person with dementia and their carer.

At masters level, this module can be studied as a standalone module or as an optional module towards our new MSc Advanced Professional Practice (Nursing and Midwifery Professions) programme and some other associated MSc Advanced Professional Practice pathways .

Entry requirements

To be considered for a place on the module:
  • you need to be a registered health and social care professional working in clinical practice
  • to study the module at degree level, you must have previously studied at level 5 (i.e. Foundation degree or equivalent)
  • to study the module at masters level, you must have previously studied to graduate level.
