About Stuart
Stuart Colville is currently a PhD candidate at the COAST Engineering Research Group at the University of Plymouth. His project is on Cryogenic sloshing in aircraft fuel tanks, he has previously completed an MEng in Mechanical Engineering at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh.
The project is an industrial CASE studentship funded by EPSRC and Airbus International. Advanced measurement techniques, applicable to cryogenic fluids, will be explored to characterise the liquid free surface and sloshing motion of multiphase (liquid/gas) flow regimes. Initially laboratory testing of fluids at room temperature will be conducted, volatile liquids will also be considered as cryogenic substitutes. Characterising the sloshing motion is of paramount importance for effective design of liquid hydrogen storage systems applicable to next generation fuel tanks on-board Airbus’ ZEROe hybrid-hydrogen concept aircraft.
