About Helen
I am currently a lecturer on the Advanced Professional Practice (Clinical Practitioner) and Advanced Clinical Practitioner apprenticeship programmes within the Faculty of Health under the School of Nursing and Midwifery. I lead on the clinical assessment skills module APP770. I have a passion to drive forward clinical roles within nursing, para-medicine and other allied health professions to equip learners, who are experienced clinicians within their own right, with advanced consultation skills, decision making and diagnostic reasoning skills to help the progression of allied health professionals within the NHS. I am still actively working in the NHS as an Advanced Clinical Practitioner in Emergency Medicine which ties in nicely with frameworks such as NHS England's 'Centre for Advancing Practice' advanced practice agenda, the RCN Advanced Clinical Practice credentialing service and the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM) ACP agenda. I have been a Senior Fellow of the Higher education Academy since 2023.
I am a nurse by background and have had the most wonderful opportunity to share my time between being an Advanced Clinical Practitioner in Emergency Medicine in ED at Treliske in Truro as well as teaching on the Advanced Clinical Practice Programme here at UoP.
I am currently deputy chair of the Association of Advanced Practice Educators (UK) (AAPEUK) at a national level and recently was re-elecetd by my peers to serve a further term in this role. Part of this experience has afforded me the opportunity to be part of the International Advanced Practice Educators Network that has generated stream of work focussing on Advanced practice on the international stage.
I have undertaken external examiner roles at several institutions including working as an independent assessor for the ACP end point assessments aligning to the nationally set standards form the Institute of Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfATE).
