Biography

Biography

I study crinoid ecology and biology, as well as other echinoderms and benthic biodiversity in subtidal environments, especially deep-sea and mesophotic ecosystems. These organisms serve as important models to understand the fundamental biology of how systems work. I leverage this knowledge to address pressing issues related to the biodiversity crisis and human health. My work is inherently interdisciplinary and we lead research expeditions in some of the deepest, most remote and unknown corners of our oceans using deep-diving technologies (e.g. ROVs, submersibles, technical SCUBA diving).

Creative practice & artistic projects

I am passionate about sharing my ocean discoveries and scientific knowledge with the broader community, as I firmly believe in the transformative potential of grassroots, community-driven initiatives. For this reason, I co-lead the Wild Postgard Project to bring biodiversity into people’s lives in unexpected, magical, and thought-provoking ways – to spark compassion and ignite the urge to safeguard nature. Follow updates on our Instagram @WildPostcardProject.
In my spare time, I enjoy painting, drawing, and making pottery. I take most of my inspiration from nature, especially the underwater biodiversity that I study. I spend a lot of time at the bottom of the ocean – it is such a diverse, beautiful, and fascinating world! Through my art, I aim to make the rich textures and vibrant colours of the world I study more accessible to everyone, allowing you to experience it too!
