Ewen McColl

Professor Ewen McColl , Head of University of Plymouth Peninsula Dental School , has been chosen as the new editorial director of Dental Update.
A key publication for professionals at all levels of dentistry internationally, the journal recently celebrated its 50th anniversary and Ewen becomes only the third editor in its history.
Dental Update is the leading peer-reviewed clinical journal for the general dental practitioner (GDP). It helps GDPs face everyday challenges that occur in the surgery, offering practical and relevant solutions, and keeping practitioners informed of innovative developments and clinical procedures.
With every UK dental school subscribing to Dental Update online, and over 100 international dental schools offering the journal to future clinicians, it has a significant educational role worldwide.

Dental Update has been essential reading at every stage of my career, and now having qualified 30 years ago, it is a great honour for me become the editorial director.

The editorial board consists of the leading lights of UK dentistry, and previous editorial directors have been so influential in the profession, so I certainly feel like I am standing on the shoulders of giants.
This honour is of extra significance given that this is Dental Update’s 50th anniversary.

The journal remains as significant today as it was 50 years ago, particularly to hard-pressed clinicians in general dental practice, where most clinicians work.

With every UK dental school subscribing to Dental Update online, and over 100 international dental schools offering the journal to future clinicians, I hope to have influence on the future of dentistry across the globe, and champion the high standards of clinical dentistry at Plymouth.

Dental Update publishes a range of articles including reviews, case reports, commentaries, letters to the editor and commissioned articles. In addition, occasional guest editorials address contemporary subjects of interest, be these clinical or relevant to the process of dental practice.
Previous editors have included Dr Ted Renson who in 1978 went on to become Professor of Conservative Dentistry at The University of Hong Kong and one of the Founders of the Prince Philip Dental Hospital in Hong Kong. The most recent Editorial Director is Professor Trevor Burke, University of Birmingham, who took on the role in 1996 and has overseen the journal’s international expansion and success.
The journal was recently described by Sir Nairn Wilson, past Dental Dean of Kings College London, as a “jewel in the crown of Dental Publications”.
