English language requirements

To be accepted onto a degree course with us you must have a suitable English language qualification. The tables below show the minimum English language requirements for standard courses at RQF 6 (degree level) and above.
Some courses have English language requirements that are higher than those shown below; please check the relevant course for details.

What if I don't meet the requirements?

If you don't think you will be able to meet these requirements, you may be able to join a pre-sessional English language course offered by our English Language Centre . Please note that to study a pre-sessional English language course UKVI require Student (formerly Tier 4) visa holders to take a Secure English Language Test (SELT) at a UKVI approved test centre ( details of approved SELTs ).

Notes

The University of Plymouth continues to accept the IELTS (academic) test for study at and below degree level. We also accept the IELTS One Skill Retake test, with scores required as outlined above.
To study a pre-sessional (English language) course applicants must take the IELTS academic test at a UKVI approved test centre and obtain the required scores to meet UKVI and the University of Plymouth requirements.
To study on an undergraduate, postgraduate taught or postgraduate research degree programme, the University will accept IELTS academic tests taken at non-UKVI approved test centres.
Applicants must obtain the required scores to meet UKVI and the University of Plymouth requirements. The University of Plymouth does not accept the IELTS Life Skills test or IELTS Online test for direct entry onto degree programmes. It is the responsibility of applicants to ensure they are sitting the appropriate test at the correct type of test centre that will allow them to apply for the visa they require for study.
We strongly recommend that applicants register to take the IELTS academic test at a UKVI approved test centre if there is the possibility they will need to study on a pre-sessional programme, as tests taken at a non-UKVI approved centre cannot be used for Tier 4 visa applications for pre-sessional courses.
We also accept the IELTS for UKVI (Academic) test delivered on a computer with the same required scores overall and component scores.

The validity period of qualifications accepted

IELTS academic tests (non SELTS) should also have been taken no more than three years prior to your course start date at Plymouth.
IELTS academic tests (SELTS, taken at UKVI approved test centres) should have been taken within two yearsof the date your CAS is issued for studies at Plymouth. This is a UKVI requirement.
