iOS Developer at Invenias Limited
"At the start of my second year at University of Plymouth I attended an iOS professional development course given by my degree course leader, Dr Nick Outram. During this time he taught us the basics of memory management, MVC (Model view controller) paradigms and UIKit (software framework for building iPhone /iPad apps), which enabled us to create our own basic apps.
Building on skills learned from my taught programme in computer science, I took this a step further, and with the help of Apple documentation built my own application and published to the App Store. Within its first month it reached the Top 10 within its category – I was earning money through a hobby!
This experience enabled me to obtain a year’s industry experience working as an iOS developer at Yell Labs. Throughout the placement I worked on many of the core Yell products as well as many proof of concepts which made it to real products.
On returning back from placement and due to the success of my own applications; which funded my final year of my degree, I was approached by a national ADHD charity to create an application that aided day-to-day lives of those with ADHD. This provided for them a simple way to keep track of their medication, moods and compile reports for clinicians. As well as providing themselves with this information it also shared the data via a parents companion application. This used and extended knowledge gained from my placement.
The ADHD & Guardian Angel app is now recognised by ADHD charities around the world and the usage is growing on a weekly basis. Not only did this help them, and myself in gaining a First Class Honours degree it also aided me in finding a Full Time job before graduating."
