Purpose of refresher training

PFSO refresher training is defined as continuation training undertaken by a professional already qualified as a PFSO, and in possession of a PFSO training certificate issued by one of DfT’s accredited training providers.
The ISPS Code does not require contracting governments to mandate refresher training for PFSOs. However, DfT has deemed it necessary for refresher training to take place in order ensure that the skills and knowledge of PFSOs are maintained to a minimum standard, particularly when regulations and threats are subject to variation, and where PFSOs have had a gap in employment.
Refresher training will be treated as an opportunity to share skills, knowledge, and experience amongst professionals, and should stimulate discussions around best practice and improving security.

PFSOs must undertake refresher training every five years while in post, and after a career break of 24 months or more before resuming a PFSO role.
PFSO Refresher courses are valid for a period of no more than five years from the date of course completion.
