The International Ocean Drilling Programme (IODP3) is an international marine research collaboration that explores Earth’s history and dynamics using ocean-going research platforms to recover data recorded in seafloor sediments and rocks and to monitor subseafloor environments. It is the successor to the current International Ocean Discovery Program, which ends this year.
Hosted by the University of Plymouth within the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences, the IODP3 Science Office acts as the single interface for all scientists around the world wishing to engage with the programme, and is responsible for coordinating the submission and evaluation of all applications to participate and of all scientific drilling proposals submitted by the international marine science community, and for producing all IODP3 publications.

Plymouth-based researchers are invited to join us for an IODP3 Science Office launch event, which will provide key information about the new IODP3 programme, including how to become involved in what is considered by Nature as “arguably the most successful international research collaboration ever”.
Come along to find out how the IODP3 programme may benefit you, your research and even your marine science teaching.
The event comprises a wine reception followed by a short presentation.
PROGRAMME
  • 18:00 – Wine reception (Block A, Ground Floor Atrium)
  • 18:30 – Talk (Devonport Lecture Theatre)
  • 20:00 – Event ends
Please register your attendance via the above link.
Email Tony Morris (antony.morris@plymouth.ac.uk) for further information.
PRESENTATION
  • How the new IODP3 was developed and designed, and the important differences between this and previous ocean drilling programmes
  • The long-term vision for marine geosciences outlined in the “2050 Science Framework”, that will guide the next 25+ years of scientific ocean drilling research, including new initiatives such as “Land to Sea Transect” expeditions
  • The role that the Science Office plays in delivering this exciting new research agenda
  • An introduction to our team members and their roles
  • New opportunities to become involved in IODP3 expeditions, including new ways to participate without going to sea
  • New funding opportunities for international, interdisciplinary projects using core materials and data collected over the 50+ year history of scientific ocean drilling, via a new initiative called SPARCs (“Scientific Projects using Ocean Drilling Archives”)
The IODP3 Science Office comprises Tony Morris (Lead Director, University of Plymouth) and Dr Nobu Eguchi (JAMSTEC, Japan) (Co-Director), supported by University of Plymouth marine researchers Dr Jodie Fisher, Dr Chiara Amadori and Dr Myriam Kars.
