Mel was a much loved and respected member of University staff who sadly passed away in 2018. Mel’s family have launched this award to celebrate Mel’s passion for Plymouth and its inspiring and passionate students.
Eligibility
The Mel Joyner award will support students at the University of Plymouth who are underrepresented in higher education.
To be eligible you must show how you are making a contribution to University Life. This could be through a society, a local community project or by bringing people together. Students can apply themselves or be nominated by a staff member or fellow student. The award will be in the region of £500.
How to apply
Submit your statement (or nomination statement), maximum 400 words, by emailing the application form to giving@plymouth.ac.uk. Please fill out your name (or nominee’s name), course and contact details. The statement should address how you or your nominee meet the criteria and are making a contribution to University life.
Applications open: Monday 29 April 2024
Deadline for applications: Friday 17 May 2024
Students who are underrepresented in higher education include those:
- from low-income backgrounds;
- from areas where participation in higher education is low;
- who are the first in their generation to consider higher education;
- who attend schools and colleges where performance is below the national average;
- who are care experienced;
- who live with a disability;
- who are young carers;
- estranged from their families;
- from underrepresented ethnic backgrounds;
- from military families;
- from Gypsy, Roma or Traveller communities;
- who are refugees or asylum seekers.
