Student load fraud

We have had reports that there is an uplift in student loan scams currently. Students are advised to be vigilant against scams as they await payment of their maintenance loans, especially emails purporting to be from the Student Accounts team requesting payment. International students are also advised that several scams are currently in operation relating to FX / currency exchange.
The Student Loans Company (SLC) is also urging students to be aware of fraud and smishing scams. Scammers will try to trick students into giving away personal and financial information by sending fake emails (phishing) and texts (smishing) or calling and pretending to be from SLC, Student Finance England (SFE), the university Student Accounts team, or other legitimate organisations.
The SLC, Student Finance England (SFE), and the university Student Accounts team, will never ask students to provide their personal or financial information via email or text message, or to provide personal information over the phone other than to verify the account.
The student accounts team will only email from their University email account studentaccountsteam@plymouth.ac.uk.

What date should I pay my fee by?

If you are paying all or a portion of your tuition fee personally, University policy is that you pay in full upon enrolment, however we do make provision for students who are unable to pay the full amount at once.

2024/2025

If it is not possible for you to pay your tuition fee in full on enrolment, you are able to pay over three instalments as outlined below.
For those programmes commencing between September and December:
  • 33% to be paid by 4 November 2024
  • 33% to be paid by 7 February 2025
  • 34% to be paid by 2 May 2025
For those programmes commencing between January and March:
  • 33% to be paid by 7 March 2025
  • 33% to be paid by 6 June 2025
  • 34% to be paid by 5 September 2025
For those programmes commencing between April and July:
  • 33% to be paid by 6 June 2025
  • 33% to be paid by 5 September 2025
  • 34% to be paid by 5 December 2025

2023/2024

  • 33% to be paid by 2 September 2024
  • 34% to be paid by 2 December 2024

International fee deposits for any students enrolling from January 2024 onwards will be £3,500.

Tuition fee fraud

The Higher Education sector is seeing rising levels of fraud in relation to the payment of tuition fees. Please do not pay your tuition fee through a ‘third party facilitator’, particularly if that facilitator approaches you direct and offers a discount. A ‘third party facilitator’ could also be someone known to you, such as another student, or a former student at the same university.

You should only ever pay your fee direct to the University using our authorised payment methods.

Chinese students have been particularly targeted. The City of London Police’s Dedicated Card and Payment Crime Unit (DCPCU) has issued an information document which provides further information. It is available in English and Chinese.

Advice for students studying professional development modules

You should receive a confirmation letter from the Professional Development Unit detailing the cost of your module(s). If you are paying the tuition fee yourself, please ensure it is paid before the module start date.
If an organisation is paying your fees, please ensure that the sponsorship form, sent to you with your application form, is fully completed and returned to the Professional Development Unit. An invoice will not be sent to your sponsor until this form is received. If your sponsoring organisation is a Health Trust, in order for us to invoice them you will need to provide the PO (Purchase Order) number as assigned by your Health Trust on the sponsor form. Unless your fully completed sponsor form is returned before the module starts you will be considered to be self-paying and required to pay the fee in full at that point. A refund to you can be subsequently arranged if your sponsor pays us later.
