Key features

This 40 credit degree-level module will enable you to develop the ability to respond to the challenges within the cardiothoracic setting through the promotion of current evidence based practice, delivering a high standard of quality care. You will also build on your knowledge and skills by integrating theory and practice into your role.

The content of this module will include:

  • cardiothoracic anatomy and physiology
  • aetiology of the disease process with identification of risk factors and preoperative interventions
  • a multidisciplinary team approach in caring for a cardiothoracic patient
  • insight into cardiothoracic surgery
  • post-operative care including principles of chest drain management, pain management, non-invasive respiratory support and basic blood gas analysis
  • cardiac pacing
  • nutritional support and rehabilitation
  • physiotherapy and chest x-ray interpretation and open chest simulation
  • current cardiothoracic research.
