Nursing the critically ill child in a general intensive care unit (degree level) (HEAC358)

This 20 credit degree-level module provides an introduction to aspects of paediatric critical care for experienced adult intensive care nurses. It will enable you as an intensive care nurse to further develop and utilise appropriate professional skills to care for the critically ill child and their family in an intensive care unit in a district general hospital.

You will learn to recognise a seriously ill child and be able to make an assessment of the child’s immediate condition and respond appropriately in emergency and rapidly changing situations. You will also learn to effectively contribute to, plan, implement and evaluate care for the critically ill child and his/her family by utilising evidenced based practice.

You will analyse and critically evaluate current research trends and practices in paediatric intensive care work and be able to apply these into your practice in collaboration with other relevant members of a multi-disciplinary team.

The module team describe this module as a ‘spring board’ from which you as an experienced intensive care nurse can move forward in your nursing career and, in particular, successful completion may give you the opportunity to apply for a more senior position within your chosen adult intensive care unit.
