Encountering an Anorangic Landscape

A research in progress presentation into the discourse of methods of encounter and the idea of collaboration with a landscape to define concept of Anorganic. Photography is the main source of engagement, seen as sight and gaze of the artist, together with the assemblage of post-industrial landscapes. However, photography is questioned as a method of encounter by facilitating and sharing the viewer’s space, not as an object or view into the world depicted, but to sharing the viewer’s space and duration.

Laurie Reynolds is an artist and researcher working with camera and landscape with a focus on the progress of collaboration with the materials that comprise the landscape. His work explores indeterminacy and what it means to collaborate/create with it through practice-led process work, the expanded field of photography, and an engagement with landscape. Photography is used as the artists entry point for exploration, however with the intervention of the landscape throughout various stages of the photographic process to create collaborative pieces of work that composure and build that allow land to create its own mark on the images. Recent work includes site-specific post-industrial landscapes such as cooper and iron mines within Devon and Cornwall.

Laura Hopes

Laura’s artistic practice generates physical, intuitive and often collaborative layered and multi-faceted explorations of place. Through performative explorations of sites, chosen for their potential representation of the ‘industrial sublime’ and activations of their history, we, as activator, audience or observer can come to a more intimate and embodied knowledge of place.

Laura is an artist working in digital sound and film, installed spaces and sculpture, and has developed a body of work based around explorations of the sublime anthropocene. She began her PhD Studentship with the 3D3 Centre for Doctoral Training, at Plymouth University, in October 2017.
