STRIDE Dorset was a high-impact programme designed to help businesses innovate by using new ideas or technologies. It offered tailored support to businesses looking to commercialise new opportunities and focused on driving measurable improvements and unlocking new funding opportunities.
Building on the success of its Cornish counterpart, the STRIDE team have helped businesses across a range of sectors, including clean energy, agri-tech, space, tourism, and the arts. With the project's expansion to Dorset, it brought the same expertise to the region.

Tailored support

STRIDE Dorset offered a range of tailored services designed to help businesses innovate, grow, and develop. Whether businesses were at the ideas stage or needed support with an existing plan, the IKE Institute accredited programmes provided the tools and guidance needed to succeed.

Cultural Changes

Innovation starts with the right mindset, and STRIDE focused on helping businesses foster a culture that supported innovation. Through masterclasses and innovation exchange activities, businesses gained an understanding of the innovation process and developed the tools needed to successfully implement innovation projects. This cultural shift is a key driver for long-term productivity and growth. .

Specialist Surgeries

For businesses ready to take the next step, STRIDE Dorset provided Specialist Surgeries offered expert support on key areas like intellectual property, patent registration, NDAs, R&D tax credits, and finance. Delivered through one-to-one or small group sessions, these surgeries gave businesses the essential knowledge needed to move their innovations forward with confidence.

Innovation Acceleration

STRIDE Dorset delivered bespoke innovation support through tailored one-to-one or small group sessions. This comprehensive service included consultancy, research, access to academic expertise, product development, prototyping, and engagement with university facilities. The aim was to create real, measurable improvements for businesses, helping them scale and innovate more effectively.

Innovation Vouchers

To support businesses at critical stages of their innovation journey, STRIDE Dorset offered Innovation Vouchers of up to £4,500. These vouchers were used for essential interventions such as purchasing specialist equipment, organising surveys, hosting focus groups, or securing legal documents – providing the extra boost needed to turn ideas into reality.

Innovation for Business Conference

Held at the BattleLab, this inspiring event brought together businesses from across Dorset to explore new ways of thinking. Featuring speakers, interactive demonstrations, and showcasing the support available through the University of Plymouth, the conference aimed to spark new ideas and promote innovation across the region. It also highlighted the resources available at the BattleLab and the wider Innovation Park.

STRIDE brought the Innovation For Business Conference (#IFB) to Dorset following the success of two sell-out events in Cornwall. The conference welcomed national and international speakers, showcased the latest innovations and technology, and helped build the innovation community in the region.

Nicole Yershon – A pioneer in disruptive innovation, Nicole founded The NYC and led Ogilvy’s Innovation Labs, helping organisations embrace change and future-proof their businesses.
Professor Sam Medhat – CEO of the Institute of Innovation and Knowledge Exchange, Sam has worked with major organisations like Rolls Royce, NATO, and Siemens on innovation strategy and leadership.

Layla Burrows – As South West Regional Manager for Innovate UK, Layla helps businesses navigate funding and innovation opportunities at a national level.
Professor Katharine Willis – A leading researcher in Smart Cities and Communities at the University of Plymouth, Katharine explores how digital technology can create more inclusive, connected spaces.
John Acton – Former MD of the DPD Group, John has over 30 years of experience in senior leadership. Now a consultant and co-founder of Peer2Peer Global, he helps leaders build strong teams and successful businesses with strategic and critical thinking.
Paul Gilbert – A business specialist with a background in manufacturing, Paul advises companies on product development, sustainability, and digital transformation. Working with Oxford Innovation Advice, he works with businesses of all sectors and sizes.
Mike Phillips – Director of i-DAT and Professor of Interdisciplinary Arts, Mike’s work explores how data and technology shape our understanding of the world.
Brent Treloar – Representing the South West Innovation Fund, Brent connects businesses with financial opportunities to drive innovation and growth.
Rupert Lorraine – As Director of the Arts Institute at the University of Plymouth, Rupert champions creative innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Sam Baynham – Founder of ConeX Portal, Sam draws on his extensive manufacturing experience to foster collaboration and overcome supply chain challenges in the product development community.
