JAL! Celebrating cultures of water in rural Rajasthan

Invitation to a one-day seminar in Bristol. Friday 5 October 2018, 9:30 for 10:00 start – 16:00.

Culmination of an AHRC funded arts-community network project between UK and India addressing water scarcity in rural Rajasthan. This one-day seminar will reflect on the potential and role of the arts and creative practice to address critical global challenges:

  • Where and how artists are engaging with social and environmental issues.
  • The challenges, opportunities and implications of accessing and engaging vulnerable individuals and communities through the arts.
  • How community-based arts can contribute to improvements in the welfare of those living in tenuous conditions.
  • Interdisciplinary challenges associated with bringing together science and arts perspectives in addressing critical social and environmental issues.

Land/Water and the Visual Arts

As a research group it operates as a forum for interrogation of nature and culture, aesthetics and representation.

Land/Water consists of artists, writers and curators who embrace a diversity of creative and critical practices. As a research group it operates as a forum for the interrogation of nature and culture, aesthetics and representation. Questioning imagery and practices relating to land, landscape and place is central to our ethos. As artists, writers, curators we work individually exploring space and place as a point of departure for experimenting in new modes of communication through picturing. We generate work that addresses a range of issues. These include environmental change, sustainability, journey, site and regional specificity.
