The ESRC Festival of Social Science offers a fascinating insight into some of the country's leading social science research and how it influences our social, economic and political lives – both now and in the future.

The festival is an opportunity for our researchers to engage with non-academic audiences, increasing awareness of the impact of social science on society and the economy. It is an opportunity for the audience to meet the researchers, engage in research activities and potentially influence research.

2021 was the 19th Festival of Social Science. There was a mix of virtual and face-to-face events, held across the UK, which allowed everyone to take part in and hear about social science research at the festival's many engaging events.

This year the festival had a focus on the environment to mark the UK's hosting of COP26.

The University has participated in the event since 2014.

About the ESRC Festival of Social Science

The ESRC Festival of Social Science is an annual celebration of the social sciences and a key element of ESRC’s commitment to promote awareness of UK social science research to new audiences. This year the festival will be held from 1-30 November 2021 and will feature exciting and creative events run by ESRC's 34 partners.


FESTIVAL AIMS

  • to encourage, support and create opportunities for social science researchers to engage with non-academic audiences
  • to promote and increase awareness of the social sciences and ESRC-funded research
  • to promote and increase awareness of the contribution social science makes to the wellbeing and the economy of society in the UK
  • to enable the public to engage with social science research
  • to engage with teachers and young people and to raise their awareness of the social sciences
You may be surprised at just how relevant the festival's events are to society today. Social science research makes a difference. Discover how it shapes public policy and contributes to making the economy more competitive, as well as giving people a better understanding of 21st century society.

Everyone – from schoolchildren to politicians – can take part in and hear about social science research in the festival's many engaging events.

The events shaping our world, from climate change to Brexit and coronavirus, to geopolitical tensions and civic protests, reveal how social science is more important than ever to understanding the world. From big ideas to the most detailed observations, social science affects us all every day – at work, in school, when raising children, within our communities, from the personal and local, to the national and global level.

About the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)

The ESRC is part of UK Research and Innovation, a non-departmental public body funded by a grant-in-aid from the UK government. It is the UK’s largest funder of research on the social and economic questions facing us today. It supports the development and training of the UK’s future social scientists and also funds major studies that provide the infrastructure for research. ESRC-funded research informs policymakers and practitioners and helps make businesses, voluntary bodies and other organisations more effective.

Supporting COP26 – UN Climate Change Conference 2021

The University of Plymouth is proud to be part of the COP26 Universities Network, collaborating with over 40 other universities across the UK to help deliver a successful COP26. 

The network is a growing group of more than 55 UK-based universities and research centres working together to raise ambition for tangible outcomes from the UN COP26 Climate Change Conference. Its mission ensured that the UK academic sector played its role in delivering a successful COP26, in order to deliver a zero-carbon, resilient world.
