Conflict affects all areas of our lives – school, workplace and social life – but what can we do to address the causes of conflict and resolve problems when they arise?
In this session pupils learnt how the techniques and tools used to manage conflict in the workplace can be applied to everyday life. Using real examples and role-play scenarios participants had the opportunity to test their skills and develop new strategies for handling difficult situations.

Biography: Professor Duncan Lewis

Duncan is Professor of Management at the University and was previously Acas Professor of Workplace Futures at the Glamorgan Business School. Co-author of Trouble at Work, Duncan has been co-investigator on two large-scale publicly funded (ESRC) studies of bullying, discrimination and workplace ill-treatment. 
An expert on workplace bullying and ill-treatment Duncan has been a keynote speaker at conferences across Europe and as far afield as Australia and New Zealand.
In 2010 Duncan was Chair of the International Conference on Workplace Bullying and Harassment and is a founding member of the researcher network ‘The International Association of Workplace Bullying and Harassment’. 
Duncan has worked with a range of blue-chip employers including British Airways, Royal Mail, Rolls Royce, Co-operative Financial Services amongst others. 
He has worked extensively on bullying and harassment and culture change with public bodies including the NHS, local government and armed forces.

Biography: Dr Richard Saundry

Richard is Associate Professor (Reader) in Human Resource and Leadership Studies and one of the UK’s leading authorities on the management of conflict at work. He is both a Research Associate and Policy Associate for the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (Acas). He has conducted a number of research projects in relation to workplace conflict, funded by Acas and the Department of Trade and Industry (now BIS).
He was recently the principal organiser of an ESRC Seminar Series – 'Reframing Resolution – Managing Conflict and Resolving Individual Employment Disputes in the Contemporary Workplace' – which brought together leading academics and practitioners in a series of six seminars held across the UK. He teaches employee relations and employment law at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.
Richard previously worked at the University of Central Lancashire and the University of Leeds. He has also conducted research into trade union revitalisation and union learning receiving funding from the ESRC, TUC and UNISON. Richard has published a wide range of peer reviewed journal articles and policy reports and is currently a member of the editorial board of Work, Employment and Society.
