The University of Plymouth is supportive of new proposals aimed at meeting the Government's requirements for devolution in the South West.
Plymouth City Council has thrown its weight behind Cornwall, Devon, Plymouth and Torbay coming together under a single strategic body with an elected mayor, akin to arrangements in places like Manchester and Birmingham. You can read more about their plans on the Plymouth City Council website.
And now, following discussions internally, the University of Plymouth is backing the council's vision.
Tamar and Royal Albert Bridges linking Devon and Cornwall
Plymouth is the university of choice for the majority of students who live in Devon and Cornwall* and study at its campuses in the city, as well as in Truro and Exeter, plus partner colleges. It also has facilities in Brixham, and manages three Innovation Centres in Cornwall.
The University has a long-standing commitment to using its research, innovation and education strengths to support both the growth of businesses and the needs of communities across the South West and beyond. That includes working closely with partners across the region to drive innovation and generate solutions around key challenges such as food security, energy and defence.

These kinds of solutions require pan-regional approaches and partnerships at scale. We believe a combined strategic authority across the region will provide much greater traction for the economic case for investment, delivering long-term benefits for our communities.

Our University's work straddles Devon and Cornwall and we work across borders – nationally and internationally – every day. Plymouth is an institution that brings communities together, encourages collaboration, and thrives on partnership.
We believe these changes will open up enormous opportunities for education, skills and economic growth in the South West peninsula.
