Freshlings staff celebrate outstanding Ofsted

The University of Plymouth’s on-site nursery has been named outstanding in all areas at a recent Ofsted inspection.
Run by University Commercial Services Plymouth , Freshlings Nursery was named outstanding in its quality education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development and leadership and management.
Ofsted no longer uses a single overall grade, or one-word rating, for schools or early years settings, instead focusing on key judgements in individual areas.

Report highlights include:

  • “Children thrive at this exceptionally nurturing and inclusive nursery. The nursery ensures that the well-being of children and families is at the heart of everything they do.”
  • “Leaders and staff plan an inspirational curriculum based on children's previous learning and their knowledge of best practice. They seamlessly thread individual children's next steps into play experiences.”
  • “The nursery has high expectations of all children. Staff use their excellent knowledge of how children develop, alongside regular assessments, to create highly personalised learning plans.”
  • “The knowledgeable and inspirational leaders have a true passion for providing the best possible care.”

In a challenging environment for the early years sector, Freshlings worked closely with University of Plymouth researcher, Professor Verity Campbell Barr to refresh its curriculum and empower staff to deliver it. The nursery has also undergone a refurbishment, with a facelift to make its spaces more welcoming.

Despite the early years sector struggling with recruitment, we have delivered high quality care and education to an outstanding standard.

Our very dedicated staff team contribute hugely to the reflective, caring, and nurturing environment that we have at Freshlings, so to see the work recognised officially is fantastic.

As well as exploring the wider sector and working with dedicated nursery staff to implement the curriculum changes, Professor Campbell-Barr also embedded a scheme within the University’s Early Childhood Studies programme to help students ‘earn while they learn’. Students are given paid opportunities to put their skills into practice at the nursery, offering valuable support, while receiving valuable experience.

There has always been such dedication from staff at Freshlings, and I was pleased to be able to offer some insight into what makes a great early-years curriculum.

I explored what the research tells us about caring for and enriching young children, and seeing how we could build on the great work already happening.
This has been an incredible team effort and it’s wonderful to see everything recognised by Ofsted, as well as anecdotal feedback from parents.
What’s particularly lovely is that the positive words around equality and inclusivity really resonate with what we strive for at the University as a whole.
