Harry Bateman - Young Rail Professional of the Year 2025

Harry Bateman, a BSc (Hons) Business Management graduate from the University of Plymouth, has earned a prestigious prize at the Young Rail Professionals Awards 2025.
Harry, now working as a Business Development Graduate at Alstom, was named Young Rail Professional of the Year.
The award honours an individual who uses their platform to show wider society all the railway has to offer, while inspiring those within the industry.
Harry was selected to win the award in recognition of the key role he has played in a number of diversity, inclusion and mental health initiatives.
That has included creating and developing Alstom’s inaugural UK and Ireland podcast series, and he now serves as its host, editor and producer.
As well as exploring the different people and roles that make up Alstom’s 6,000-strong workforce across the two countries, the podcasts focuses on the importance of mental health and diversity among employees.

I feel extremely honoured to have been named Young Rail Professional of the Year.

It was an absolutely amazing night, made even more special by the fact that my family attended the event as well. Ever since joining Alstom in 2023, I’ve always felt like I could be myself and have been actively encouraged to do so. Without Alstom providing an environment where people feel safe and valued, we would not be in a position where colleagues want to get involved with initiatives such as the podcast.

In his core role as Business Development Graduate, Harry has carried out short term placements within various teams, including Bid Management, Cost Management and Business Development.
Each placement is focussed on a mixture of learning about the role and then working on new ways to help improve the processes within that area.
Harry has conducted research into ways artificial intelligence (AI) can be used to improve efficiency, he built Power BI dashboards to increase the visualisation of data, and he had provided various aids in technical aspects of ongoing tenders – of which one he personally led.
Carly Hutchings, HR Director at Alstom UK and Ireland, added:
“We are committed to nurturing and empowering the next generation of rail professionals, and it is fantastic to see Harry recognised for his contribution. His passion, innovation and leadership exemplifies the values we strive to instil across our workforce.”
