World map textured brain with overlay of abstract connections
The environment and lifestyle neuroscience research theme builds upon the world-leading expertise at the Brain Research & Imaging Centre (BRIC) and exploits our unique capability and emerging strength in neuroscience of environmental extremes (pressure, gas and temperature), spatial navigation and the neurocognitive impact of lifestyle.
The research theme is home to an array of world-leading research such as:
  • Hyperbaric neuroscience: neural responses to altered pressure and gas environments.
  • Space neuroscience: understanding neural adaptations in extra-terrestrial environments.
  • Spatial neuroscience: identifying the neural processes serving environment navigation.
  • Thermoneurology: exploring the impact of brain temperature on performance.
  • Neural correlates of fatigue: brain markers of sleep and rest patterns.

Research projects

Other exciting projects include:

  • Heat sensitivity during exercise in people with MS – studying the effects of temperature on the brain using a cooling collar and MRI to ascertain the impact on exercise for people with MS.
  • Hypobaric research in collaboration with Mona Nassar and the CAMeos project.
  • Mindwandering.
