This module provides an introduction to the main characteristics of different forms of life on Earth and how they evolved.

Health and Welfare of Animals
This module gives students an understanding of the ethical and practical considerations required to maintain health in animals in a variety of contexts and how to detect ill health.

Animal Nutrition
This module considers the nutrition of a range of animals. Topics covered include feeding types, nutritional requirements, digestion, natural and artificial foods, and nutritional disorders.

Key Professional Skills
This module parameterises the internal and external factors that defines the relevant employment sector, providing students with the knowledge and skills to begin positioning themselves professionally within that field. PESTLE factors for the industry will be covered as well as specific personal, professional and employability skills required for both academic study and the workplace

Fundamentals of Animal Behaviour
This module is designed to give the student a thorough grounding in the theories of animal behaviour and knowledge of behavioural research. Students are expected to undertake a small behavioural survey as part of the module assessment along with a theory test.

Individual Research Project
This module gives students the opportunity to conduct their own research project. Student involvement and responsibility stretches from project conception and planning, literature research, analysis and interpretation of data to report writing and presentation.

Animal Breeding and Conservation Genetics
This module provides students with an understanding of reproductive biology and how this relates to animal population management within both a captive and a wild setting. The module will further investigate how genetics can support population management and conservation.

Animal Disease
This module will introduce the student to the epidemiology, aetiology, pathogenesis, pathology of disease, diagnostic aids and suggested treatments and management of disease for animals.

Zoo Exhibit Management in Practice
This module explores the role of the animal keeper both as a husbandry specialist, and as promoter of the visitor’s understanding of the animal exhibits in a collection
CORN2014
Husbandry of Captive Vertebrates
To provide students with an understanding of the taxonomy, anatomy and physiology of vertebrates including wild and captive behaviours. To explore actual and best practice in husbandry requirements of a range of animals in private and public collections
CORN2015
Husbandry and Conservation of Aquatic Organisms
This module considers the scientific principles required to establish and maintain aquaria and explores conservation issues and practices as they apply to aquatic organisms
* UK Government announcement on tuition fees
On Monday 4 November 2024 the UK Government announced a proposal to increase tuition fees for home undergraduate students from £9,250 to £9,535 per annum from September 2025 onwards. The University of Plymouth intends to apply this new fee from September 2025. However, implementation of this increase will be subject to Parliamentary procedure. The University will give further details to both prospective and current students as soon as more information becomes available.
Completing this course enables you to progress onto these related courses and programmes with the University of Plymouth at level 5 or level 6, as specifically defined by this programme’s progression agreement.
