“Starting patient care in the first year really helped me build confidence”

Current Year 4 dental student Mohammed Chohan appreciates the early hands-on clinical experience provided on the BDS Dental Surgery course

What are the benefits of studying BDS Dental Surgery at Plymouth?
From early clinical exposure and how they emphasise holistic treatment, to the blend of hands-on practical and patient-centred care that we are taught, it feels like we are not just learning technical skills, but really preparing to make a different in people's lives.
Plus, having a supportive network of tutors and classmates has made it all the more rewarding and meaningful.

Why did you choose to study at Plymouth?
I chose to study at the Peninsula Dental School because of its hands-on, patient-centred approach and early clinical exposure.
From Year 1 we see and work with patients early on, developing our skills for real-life practice. The amazing facilities and clinical opportunities have been invaluable in building my skills and confidence.
But also, Plymouth offers a nice balance of city life and beautiful coastal areas for downtime, with the Plymouth Hoe right on our doorstep.

What are your favourite things about the course?
Starting patient care in the first year really helped me build confidence and connect the theory to real cases. It’s been so rewarding to see my skills grow, from learning simple fillings to doing a root canal treatment on a patient.
My favourite memory has to be giving back to the community as part of our interprofessional engagement module. Going out to the community to help promote access to dental care in settings such as local charities and schools was an eye-opener. Supporting patients who might not otherwise have access to dental care and seeing their gratitude was incredibly rewarding.

One of my favourite things about the course has been the hands-on clinical experience we get early on.

Do you have any advice to prospective students?
Stay organised, practice as much as you can and don't be afraid to ask for help from tutors and your classmates for support. Balance is key, so make sure to make time for yourself outside of studying.
Dental school can have its challenges, but seeing your progress each year makes it all worth it. Good luck!
