Title: Entangled thinking: Architecture, Material Agencies and Deep Structures
This lecture addresses the fundamentally entangled nature of architecture. While the modernist period would suggest that we look at architecture as singular expressions of visionary design, current thinking is more attuned to the complexities at play in realizing a project. The built environment as a whole is an amalgam of cultural preconceptions, urban regulations, material logic, and political decisions, among others. In this complexity, how can we address the architectural project as meaningful? Building on examples from history, contemporary practice, and teaching, this lecture explores a number of ways to critically examine the entanglements of architecture in discourse and design.
