Where: RLB Crosspoint
What: Year 1 Communication in BA (Hons) Architecture Coursework Exhibition, Knots: Thinking through Making

Thinking through making reflects both ideas and making being created at the same time. In processes of making and the movement of the imagination under sensory awareness, artefacts are crafted. These artefacts are way-stations on their way to becoming something else. Every thought and new skill passing through in a process of thinking that carries on. Every artefact (drawing, model, collage, sound) is a way station to a stream of ideas continually evolving.

Making, in this sense, is a form of weaving, with each artefact a knot – a momentary hanging of materials and ideas. These knots are not bounded structures, they can transform or be undone.

This exhibition represents an architectural way of knowing from the inside. Architectural knowledge is not created from minds already furnished with complete concepts and a material world of objects. Rather, this knowledge grows from practical and observational engagement with materials, beings and the things around us in the very processes of making and thought.
