Title: Site Matters: Strategies for Uncertainty through Planning and Design

Andrea Kahn is an architect, educator, and writer, has 35+ years of research and teaching experience spanning architecture, landscape architecture, urban design and urban planning. Her interests revolve around collaboration and transdisciplinary knowledge creation, and she is engaged in two ongoing research projects, “Critical Practices” and “Ecotone Thinking” examining disciplinary inclinations, and transdisciplinary opportunities, in the making and study of constructed urban landscapes. Currently, Andrea works with the Urban Futures research platform, hosted by the Swedish University of Agricultural Science (SLU). From 2015-2020, she was Professor of Site Thinking Research and Practice in the Landscape Architecture department at SLU, and from 1992-2013 taught post-graduate Urban Design and Urban Planning at Columbia University. Her publications include Drawing/Building/Text (1991); Site Matters, Design Concepts, Histories and Strategies (2005) and Site Matters, Planning and Design Strategies for Uncertainty (2020) with Carol J. Burns; and ‘scape dossier 16, Crossing the Line with Lisa Diedrich. In 2006, Kahn founded designCONTENT to provide strategic communication, collaboration and editorial consulting for creative scholars and reflective practitioners in the design and planning fields.
