Advertising, PR and marketing

There is sometimes confusion over how similar job roles are across advertising, public relations (PR) and marketing. All three areas welcome graduates from all degree disciplines but employers eagerly seek graduates with high-level communication and digital skills.
In most cases, roles in advertising, PR and marketing are quite different.
The UK's advertising sector is one of the most highly developed and many large agencies have offices right across the world. Roles in advertising agencies tend to be specific and split between working on the creative side (art director, copywriter) or the business side (account management, business planning and research). Advertising agencies are situated predominantly in London, although there are a few located in Manchester and Birmingham.
Marketing and PR agencies are more widely spread across the country and many organisations may choose to have their in-house department. In-demand skills include a strong understanding of social media platforms, digital skills in web, photography and video manipulation, and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Having relevant work experience can increase your chance of success. Experience can also be gained through writing and using social media channels through university clubs and societies, newspapers and video production and used in any application.

Armed forces and emergency services

Armed forces

The armed forces are the collective name given to the three main services that defend the United Kingdom and its overseas territories. The Royal Navy, the Royal Airforce, and the British Army all seek to recruit substantial numbers of graduates throughout the year. As a serving member of the armed forces, you could be employed in a wide range of roles ranging from combat roles to technical roles, learning development offices to musicians, military police to pharmacist officers. These roles are further supported by civilian personnel working in the Ministry of Defence (gov.uk) or one of its agencies. Getting experience in advance is beneficial and this can be gained by joining the Devon Royal Navy University Unit or one of the reserve forces units locally.

Emergency services

The emergency services in the UK are provided by the Police, Fire and Rescue, Ambulance and Coastguard Services. The coordination of the services is provided by emergency planners who direct each service to ensure emergencies are dealt with in the most successful and time efficient way possible. Supporting the emergency services are teams of other professionals such as probation officers, social workers, Health and Safety inspectors and trading standards officers.
All these roles are potentially open to graduates from an extremely broad range of degree disciplines.

Business, consulting and management

Many big graduate recruiters have general management training schemes that allow graduates to experience management in different business areas. Typically, over two years, graduates may experience sales, marketing, finance, human resources, and retail. Upon completion, graduates can apply for a role in their preferred department when an opportunity becomes available.
Other organisations may offer specific management training schemes, where graduates can apply directly to their preferred area of interest from the start. Management training schemes are highly competitive, and many organisations require a 2:1 or above to apply.
Management consultants investigate business problems and provide advice and solutions in different business areas including, finance, operations, HR, strategy, technology, or specialist support areas such as environmental and sustainability to public and private sector organisations, charities, and social enterprises.
‘The Big Five’ independent consultancies are Accenture, PWC, Deloitte, EY and KPMG, with PWC the market leader. Many of these recruit large numbers of graduates on an annual basis directly through universities for roles in business, management, and accountancy. However, many employers seeking to fill vacancies in business and management nationally are small and medium-sized firms.

Creative arts and design

The creative industries are vast and can cover visual art, design, media, performance, publishing and games. There is a whole range of further disciplines within each of these, which become industries in themselves. For example, interior, graphic, fashion, performance sportswear, user interface, web, and games all come under design. Likewise, film, TV production, advertising, marketing, and PR (public relations) would all fall under media. Companies in the creative industries tend to be small or medium-sized enterprises that will either employ graduates on a permanent, temporary, or freelance basis. The largest employers of creative graduates are media organisations such as the BBC, ITV, and Channel 4. However, substantial amounts of creative content are subcontracted out to smaller production companies, particularly advertising and design agencies.
Having a specific degree and relevant work experience can make your CV stand out with employers, and students can gain creative experience whilst studying through freelance projects, as well as course-based and independent work experience. Many digital skills in image manipulation, video editing, social media marketing and web design are hugely transferable and make graduates employable in a wide range of creative and marketing roles across all industries.

Hospitality and event management

Hospitality

There is a vast range of hospitality careers available in contract catering/food service management; hotels; leisure attractions; pubs, bars and nightclubs; restaurants and coffee shops; self-catering and holiday centres. Companies in the hospitality sector also recruit to a range of head office functions such as finance, IT, HR, customer service, sales and marketing, property and legal and general management. Graduate schemes in hospitality are often focused on these roles. Many more of the UK’s hotels and restaurants are independently owned SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises) and most pubs and bars are micro businesses employing fewer than ten people. Self-employment and running your own independent bar, pub or franchise may be a route you would like to consider in the future.

Events management

Events management careers can cover conference management; corporate days out and product launches; entertainment and sporting events; fundraising; wedding and party planning, and exhibition management. You could work for a company, a particular venue or an event supplier. Large companies such as hotel chains and contract caterers also recruit event managers, whilst some major charities have fundraising roles that involve some event planning. As with hospitality careers, another option is to become self-employed as a freelancer in the events industry.

Those employed within HR can be responsible for the recruitment of staff, staff development, training, conduct, capability and occasionally, staff dismissal.
The recruitment industry, despite its similarities with HR, is a very different kind of business. Recruitment agencies make money by finding appropriate staff for an organisation. They find candidates for vacant positions within organizations, saving time and money so that their business clients can focus on what they are good at. Recruitment agencies either specialise in specific industries or have several disciplines in which they recruit.

A career in law is open to both law and non-law graduates. For anyone with a non-law degree, a one-year GDL (Graduate Diploma in Law) will give you an equivalent qualification and access to the two-year LPC (Legal Practice Course), also known as a training contract.
For many, legal careers are about becoming barristers or solicitors. However, there are many other opportunities for law graduates, including patent or trade mark attorneys, paralegals, legal executives, licensed conveyancers and barristers’ clerks.
For a successful law career, you will need analytical and research skills, good communication skills, and the ability to work with clients. You will also have personal integrity and commercial awareness. You can develop many of these skills through activities you engage with at university. Gaining law-related experience can help you decide if this career area is right for you, which roles to target, and demonstrate your commitment and motivation for the law.

Marine biology and ocean science

Our oceans and seas are of great importance – not only are they used for shipping, they are also important for sources of food, raw materials, energy and leisure. Scientists have a range of roles to play, depending on their area of interest.
Oceanographers and marine scientists analyse the sea and its interaction with the land, atmosphere, sea floors, animal life and plants. The information obtained is used to predict changes to the earth's climate, impact on coastal infrastructure, and used to inform statutory legislation and encourage environmental protection.
Hydrographic surveyors, or hydrographers examine and produce detailed plans of seabed's, harbours and waterways by measuring and mapping underwater surfaces. The information may be used to produce charts to aid navigation and dredging, locating offshore resources (oil, gas, aggregate), positioning offshore wind farms, oil platforms and subsea cables, planning dock installations and monitoring erosion.
Jobs in marine science can be competitive although obtaining relevant experience and a postgraduate qualification can give you a distinct advantage. Graduates in this sector are employed by organisations involved in scientific research such as universities, government agencies, NGOs, conservation charities, as well as commercial organisations that need specific expertise in environmental and marine ocean science.

Opportunities in theatre and the performing arts have been significantly affected by the Covid 19 pandemic. Graduates need to show off their creative talents through a showreel, a portfolio or a website for their work to be seen or heard. In addition, graduates may also need to pay a subscription to a casting platform to be discovered, such as Spotlight.
The UK has a strong history of creative talent that has been exported across the world for many years. However, competition is fierce and gaining experience of performing outside of your studies can significantly assist confidence, network, and opportunities.
