Don Williams - MSc Advanced Clinical Practice in Ophthalmology

Specialist optometrist registered with the General Optical Council (GOC)

I am an accomplished specialist optometrist registered with the General Optical Council (GOC). I am proud to hold the distinction of being a Fellow of the College of Optometrists (FCOptom), an honour awarded to fewer than 100 practitioners in the UK by examination and portfolio, representing less than 1% of registrants. This prestigious fellowship, received in February 2020, is the highest accolade in my field, and I am honoured to be among this elite group of clinicians.
Don Williams

I graduated with honours from Aston University’s Institute of Vision Science and then went to follow further higher specialist qualifications. My career in optometry includes over three years in laser eye surgery, combining this expertise with my hospital roles.
For over a decade, I have been deeply involved in community ophthalmology, particularly in managing glaucoma patients within the Birmingham CCG (now ICB).
Recently, I have taken on the role of Clinical Lead for a leading healthcare provider running community Ophthalmology services in Birmingham. In addition to running my private practice, I am a visiting Specialist Lecturer at the University of Plymouth’s Faculty of Health Science, where I passionately teach postgraduate students in the field of glaucoma.
The role of an Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) is increasingly pivotal in modern healthcare systems. As healthcare faces ongoing challenges, including rising patient demands, complexity of cases, and the integration of new technologies, ACPs are vital for delivering high-quality, patient-centred care.
Engaging in the MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice, like the one offered by the University of Plymouth, equips clinicians with the necessary skills to excel in these roles. It not only enhances their clinical competencies but also develops their abilities in leadership and evidence-based practice. For me, the decision to pursue this program was motivated by the opportunity to deepen my clinical expertise and to play a more integral role in shaping the future of healthcare services. The program's focus on developing high-level decision-making and problem-solving skills is crucial for meeting the evolving needs of our patients and the healthcare system at large.
The highlight for me has been the exceptional dedication and passion of the faculty at the university. Their commitment to ensuring student success is evident in every aspect of the programme. The support provided by the team has been instrumental in facilitating a comprehensive and engaging learning experience. Furthermore, the content of the programme is extremely compelling and thoughtfully designed. The curriculum is well-structured, ensuring a coherent and logical progression that enhances understanding and retention.
The delivery of the programme is exemplary, featuring outstanding lecturers and speakers who are experts in their fields. Their ability to convey complex concepts clearly and effectively significantly enriches the learning process. Overall, the combination of a passionate teaching team, a well-designed curriculum, and excellent delivery makes this programme truly outstanding and a pivotal part of my professional development.
