General costs of study
Tuition fees do not cover normal costs of study such as:
- books
- stationery
- printing
- thesis branding
- photocopying
- parking charges at 'North Campus' may apply
- initial outlay for travel and accommodation in respect of practice placement.
Placements
If/when you are on placement there may be additional costs incurred for subsistence and travel.
All students within the School of Health Professions will spend time in placements away from university. The South West is a largely rural region, which often requires students to travel longer and further distances than may be expected when universities are in largely urban areas. In many cases students will stay away from home for the period of that placement time. Some students on these courses are eligible for reimbursement of additional travel and accommodation costs over normal daily travel costs. This support is part of the Learning Support Fund administered through the NHS Business Services Authority. However, this should be investigated by the student to make sure this applies to your chosen course of study.
It is difficult to give a precise estimate of placement costs for each individual programme, due to the geographical spread of placements, and duration. However it is recommended you attend an Open Day to find out more about what placement costs can be anticipated or discuss placement with a member of our admissions teams.
Despite these costs, clinical placements offer an excellent opportunity to learn from experienced clinicians and are recognised as an essential part of students' development towards becoming a registered practitioner.
Immunisations – School of Nursing and Midwifery and School of Health Professions
Applicants are offered immunisations through our Occupational Health provider at Derriford. Once enrolled, failure to attend immunisation appointments will result in a charge.
Students can elect to have immunisations at their local GP surgery at their own expense.
If you have any questions regarding any of these costs please contact:

Repeat study
If you are required to repeat a study year you will be charged a full year’s fee.
BSc (Hons) Healthcare Science (Physiological Sciences)
Failure to attend the scheduled mandatory skills training sessions would result in you having to source and self-fund your training.
BSc (Hons) Paramedic Science
Plymouth’s BSc (Hons) Paramedic Science course is not funded by the NHS; nor do students receive a bursary. Therefore, if you choose to study with us, you will need to pay your tuition fees alongside all other incidental expenses (including the costs incurred by undertaking clinical placements). As clinical placements are undertaken throughout the South West, you will need to budget for the additional expense of travelling to/from placement. Given the rural nature of the area and the unsociable hours of practice, you will also need to maintain a motor vehicle (including paying for insurance, tax, fuel, servicing, etc).
It is difficult to give a precise estimate of these costs, due to the geographical spread of placements. However successful applicants should factor in the running costs of a motor vehicle for several thousand miles per year, and bear in mind the possible need for additional accommodation. Despite these costs, clinical placements offer an excellent opportunity to learn from experienced clinicians. These experiences ensure that, upon successful completion of the course, each student is prepared to practise as a paramedic.
